Why Nutrition Matters: More Than Just a Meal

You’ve probably heard that “kids need healthy food,” but what does that really mean in everyday life? And, what does that mean for your Haven family? It’s not the same for everyone, but overall, balanced nutrition gives children the energy and nutrients their bodies and brains need for three essential areas of development:

Power for Growth

Protein isn’t just a buzzword — it’s a building block for growing bodies. It supports muscle, bone, and immune health, and overall development. But here’s something many parents may not realize: children don’t need huge amounts of protein.

In fact, children typically require about half a gram of protein per pound of body weight each day.

For example:
A 30-pound toddler needs roughly 15 grams of protein in a day. That might look like:

  • 2 hard-boiled eggs, OR
  • An 8 oz glass of milk + 2 dino nuggets, OR
  • 2 tablespoons of nut or seed butter + 1 cup prepared macaroni & cheese

These are just a few examples – there are so many more!

Power for Learning

Mealtime isn’t just about calories — it’s about brain fuel. Fun fact: A child’s brain uses more energy per pound than an adult’s, which means they need steady, balanced fuel throughout the day to support focus, memory, language development, and emotional regulation. The brain’s primary source of fuel is actually carbohydrates, so when a your child is reaching for carbs when they feel hungry, it’s okay, there’s a very understandable reason for that developmentally.

Here’s what can help:

  • Eating at regular intervals every 2–3 hours.
  • Include foods that combine nutrients: always include a carbohydrate, but pair it with some protein + healthy fats to help keep their blood sugar steady (see ideas below).
  • Choose snacks that are more than just “quick sugar” — you want to think about nutrients that last.

Their little brains are constantly developing. Providing food consistently during the day helps children stay engaged, alert, and ready to learn.

Power for Play

Play is serious work! Running, climbing, dancing, exploring, building snowmen and sand castles — all that movement takes tons of energy. When kids have the right mix of nutrients throughout the day, they’re more likely to:

  • Maintain energy during active play
  • Bounce back after intense activity
  • Enjoy social interactions without becoming overly tired

Balanced eating supports physical stamina and emotional well-being.

Snack Ideas: Pairing Foods for Lasting Energy

As parents, one of the easiest ways to support all of these needs is by offering balanced snacks that combine two food groups. This helps promote satiety, steady blood sugar, and longer-lasting energy between meals. It gives them the carbs their little brains need without the blood sugar crash that could leave them irritable and tired (think: avoid the post-Halloween night tears).

Here are some snack ideas your kids might actually love:
