First-Time Parent Chronicles: Things I Wish I Had Known

Becoming a parent for the first time is a whirlwind of emotions, sleepless nights, and countless lessons learned on the fly. As Haley and Erich reflect on their journey with their baby girl, Norah—who will be turning one in March—they’ve compiled some heartfelt thoughts and realizations from their first year as parents.

What It’s Like to Be First-Time Parents:

Becoming first-time parents is an experience unlike any other. It’s equal parts joy, exhaustion, fear, and overwhelming love. From the moment Norah entered the world, our lives shifted in ways we couldn’t have imagined. Every day brought new lessons—how to swaddle, how to soothe, how to decode her tiny cries—and each one came with a mix of pride and doubt.

The first few months were a blur of sleepless nights, constant feeding sessions, and a steep learning curve. But they were also filled with magical moments: the first smile, the first time her tiny hand wrapped around our finger, and the first time we realized she recognized our faces.

What no one tells you about being first-time parents is how much you’ll learn about yourself. Patience, resilience, and vulnerability become part of your daily routine. You’ll discover strength you didn’t know you had and love that feels boundless.

But it’s not all picture-perfect. There are hard days—days filled with doubt, frustration, and exhaustion. And yet, even on the hardest days, a single gummy smile or a soft coo can make everything feel worthwhile.

Haley’s Top 3 Reflections:

  1. The Sleepless Nights Won’t Last Forever: In the thick of it, it feels like the sleepless nights will never end. But they do. And when they’re over, part of you will even miss those quiet (albeit exhausting) midnight cuddles.
  2. Time Goes by WAY Too Fast: It’s so easy to get caught up in the small frustrations—the dishes, the messy playroom, the endless laundry. But time flies by faster than you think, and it’s so important to stop and soak in those fleeting moments.
  3. Returning to Work Was the Biggest Hurdle: Coming back to work after maternity leave was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I was so comfortable in our little baby bubble that the thought of stepping out of it felt impossible. But the support I received—from Haven, my coworkers, and having Norah nearby during the day—made all the difference. Being able to nurse her, sneak in a mid-day snuggle, and still maintain our connection helped ease the transition.

Erich’s Reflections:

  1. She Will Bring Out an Inner Child in You: Before Norah, I never realized how much joy could come from simple things—silly faces, funny noises, or dancing around the living room to a nursery rhyme. She’s brought out a version of me I didn’t even know existed, and I’m so grateful for that.

Every parent’s journey is unique, but the universal truth is that parenting is a mix of overwhelming love, unexpected challenges, and moments that make your heart swell with pride. Haley and Erich’s reflections are a reminder to cherish every stage, every milestone, and every sleepy cuddle—because this chapter, like all others, will pass by far too quickly.

Here’s to Norah turning one, and to all the parents navigating this wild, beautiful adventure for the first time.
