It Takes a Village: How Haven Redefines Modern Childcare Through Familycare

We’ve all heard the African proverb: It takes a village to raise a child. However, despite hearing it many times, how often are we truly able to listen to (and believe) that statement?

We wear motherhood like a superpower – that burp cloth is actually our cape. But as strong as we may be, the hard times still slip in and overwhelm us. In those moments, motherhood can feel like an impossible uphill battle that we’re left to climb alone.

You’re Not Imagining It — Motherhood Is Hard

When did parenting become a solo sport? How did we go from our parents’ generation of whole neighborhoods raising kids together to 70% of mothers feeling like they’re doing this alone? Surely in a time with the most advanced science and technology, we should not also be facing a loneliness epidemic that has mothers feeling overwhelmed during one of the most vulnerable stages of life.

In addition to this loneliness, our society places external life pressures upon mothers’ shoulders to be their best selves at home and work. In a 2023 study conducted by the Peanut App, 90% of American mothers surveyed feel expected to work like they don’t have children and mother like they don’t work.

Why the Village Matters

The thing about the “It takes a village” proverb is that it’s more than just a catchy slogan or wise saying. Rather, it can serve more like a permission slip for mothers to recognize that while motherhood is hard, the intensity of this hard experience can shift if we give ourselves permission to turn to our people, our community, our village. “It takes a village” is a reminder that it’s okay to need support – in fact, it’s a human instinct.

A 2022 study conducted by the National Institute of Health, explained this proverb in detail: “the phrase […] conveys the message that it takes many people (“the village”) to provide a safe, healthy environment for children, where children are given the security they need to develop and flourish, and to be able to realize their hopes and dreams.”

This is exactly why Haven was created: to bring that village back into modern parenting.

What Makes Haven Different?

Haven’s Co-Founders Britt Riley and Morgan Everson knew that for parents of young children to be successful as both parents and as professionals, childcare needed to evolve into something more holistic: familycare. This is why they created Haven: to help ensure the whole family could thrive, together, under one roof – through one door, all on one membership

“You shouldn’t have to lose who you are when you become a parent. You should be able to give your kids your all and still grow yourself. That’s what we’re here for.”
— Morgan Everson, COO & Co-Founder

By removing barriers, welcoming parents as much as children, and designing spaces where the whole family belongs, Haven created a place where stress ebbs — and community flows.

At Haven, it’s not childcare, it’s familycare™

But what does the “village” actually look like at Haven? It begins with your children. Monday – Friday (and sometimes at night), Haven’s highly trained educators engage and nurture your children, preparing them for kindergarten with a signature approach to early childhood education.. As your children are taken care of, parents can do what they need —whether it means focusing on work, working out in Haven’s in-house fitness studio, running errands, having a massage, or simply taking a moment to breathe. The full family is supported.

“To me, conventional childcare leaves out one of the most critical pieces of the puzzle: the parent. So, when we decided to build Haven, we wanted to make sure parents were given all the opportunities they needed to live a peaceful and full life with their kids – in the same breath. It goes back to the idea that if you take care of each other, everyone will thrive.”
— Britt Riley, CEO & Co-Founder, Haven

At Haven, the village comes to life when parents connect over coffee and speak about their child’s new sleeping pattern, set new fitness goals like training for a triathlon together, or enjoy the season’s latest novel in their monthly book club. Under Haven’s roof, it’s where new businesses are launched and support flows freely from fellow parents.

That’s the magic of Haven: when the doors open to everyone, parents are not just surviving, the whole family is thriving.  This is why our core motto is: it’s not childcare, it’s familycare™

Since 2019, Haven has proven that when families are truly welcomed, a genuine sense of belonging follows. And with belonging, a true village blossoms: full of “moment-minded” parents who lean on, learn from, and grow with one another.
